Metaverse is inevitable!

Hope you’ve watched the movie SpiderMan – No Way Home, if not then please do! #nospoilers
Because, then it would be a bit easier for you to understand, and relate to my today’s article – Metaverse is inevitable!

Multiverse (SpiderMan - No Way Home)
Multiverse (SpiderMan – No Way Home)

In this fictional movie, the term Multiverse has been used: A popular concept in Sci-Fi tales for decades. This concept originates from science theory, where many scientists have speculated that other universes may exist alongside our own.

Moreover, this movie depicts that an alternate Spider-Man or two can pop-up from their respective Universes to lend the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s version of the character a hand in defeating the multiversal bad guys.

There was a time when the word “Universe” was used to describe everything in existence, but the more we have learned about our universe in the field of cosmology, the more we have commenced to wonder if it could be a component of a more astronomically immense patchwork of universes.

Well, let’s not mix things – we are here to talk about the concept of Metaverse!
However, if you wish to understand how the two are different from each other, please stay tuned for my next blog topic: Metaverse vs Multiverse

Metaverse

A Metaverse is a massively scaled and interoperable network of real-time rendered 3D virtual worlds focused on social connection. In futurism and science fiction, the term is often described as a hypothetical iteration of the Internet as a single, universal virtual world that is facilitated by the use of virtual and augmented reality headsets.

This concept has been a long time in the making, since the rise of games like Second Life, Minecraft, etc. posited that you could have an alternate virtual reality where you can exist as a 3D replica of yourself, going through experiences, emotions, transactions, and interactions similar to the real world.

Metaverse is here!

To this, companies like Decentraland, Sandbox, Microsoft, and now Facebook or Meta added an element of human-computer interaction (HCI), one of my favourite subjects that I’d studied during my post-graduation. However, at that point these things were mostly theoretical!

Talking of present times, Walt Disney has already got approvals to enter the world of Metaverse, to create the ultimate extension of fan service!

Disney executives are planning for a new tomorrow wherein the companyā€™s beloved characters become a part of your world. If things go right, itā€™ll be the way you can visit Disney theme parks from the comfort of your living room.

Letā€™s skim over the nerd stuff as much as possible. Have you seen the movie Ready Player One? The Metaverse looks something like this:

Why does Disney want a Metaverse?

Once the metaverse is up and running, Disney would likely earn at least ninety cents from every dollar spent within the online world. Furthermore, everything the company adds would be digital – no need to manufacture anything!

Once Disney masters the technology, you can use a virtual headset to mimic the experience of Space Mountain and visit Disney’s theme parks from anywhere in the country.

Now, we may still be years away from even a reasonable facsimile of that premise, but this is the ultimate goal! Thousands of people can stand in the same spot and never even know it.

India’s First Metaverse Concert

Let’s imagine a person in the United States attending a Neha Kakkar concert in India virtually, with thousands of fans from across the globe. With this, I’m referring to attendingĀ virtual concerts in theĀ Metaverse, which will be much more immersive than listening to a live video.

In the Metaverse, artistes can perform anywhere in the world as people attend their concerts from the comfort of their homes. While you may be wearing a VR headset and viewing the concert alone, you will still be interacting with others in the concertā€™s shared virtual space or through live chats during the performance.

In the west, the music industry is already open to the idea of virtual concerts in the Metaverse. Big artists like Marshmello, Travis Scott, and Ariana Grande have all performed in virtual concerts. More importantly, the metaverse gives musicians a sense of community ownership, a decentralised approach where there is no particular entity dictating terms.

In the context of the music industry, Metaverse is audio/visual art, community-created 3D worlds, the right to own and sell digital items and property (or NFTs), Avatars, digital merchandises, and fashion.

To summarise:

Presently, the community is considerably small but growing gradually. So, whosoever is coming in the metaverse are the ones who are early adopters, tech enthusiasts, or someone from the crypto industry. And, believe it or not, Metaverse is inevitable and most likely to stay here for generations!
