Well, assuming now that you have some good understanding about Metaverse & the infinite capabilities it can provide, it’s time to understand what is Multiverse. Moreover, how these two concepts are different from each other, and what benefits they would provide across various niches.

With the rapidly emerging technologies across the world, the key differences between Metaverse vs Multiverse will give us all a better understanding of what’s coming in the near future! Although, full-fledged work has already begun and most top companies have started investing, to be the early adopters and leaders in this segment.

Metaverse

According to Wikipedia, Metaverse is a network of 3D virtual worlds focussed on social connection. A shared, persistent digital environment that consolidates multiple AR, VR, and MR experiences to create a converged environment where users can interact with each other and the 3D world around them.

Here, users can work, play games, go to concerts, watch movies, hangout – or  do anything else they wish to; by the use of virtual and augmented reality headsets.

Multiverse

On the contrary, the Multiverse is a hypothetical group of multiple universes. An ecosystem of many virtual worlds – each with its own properties, characteristics, and laws. Together, these universes comprise of everything that exists: space, time, energy, matter, informations, physics and constants.

The different universes within the multiverse are called “parallel universes”, “other universes”, “alternate universes”, or “many worlds”.

Key Differences:

1. Metaverse is being built, while Multiverse still remains theoretical or may already be existent.
   • Many top companies like Facebook (now Meta), Microsoft, Decentraland, Sandbox, etc. have already started investing in Metaverse. As early adopters, they’ve already visualised themselves to be the market leaders of this segment, by bringing the future a step closer to us!
   • Although, some Sci-Fi movies have portrayed the concept of Multiverse and made us believe that alternate and/or parallel universes already exist, scientists are still working day & night to prove these facts.
2. Metaverse is mandatorily immersive, while Multiverse may have 2D components
   • The Metaverse combines Augmented Reality, Virtual Reality & Mixed Reality to provide a highly immersive experience. Using these headsets & gears, depiction of real world will get even more accurate, making it easier for users to move in and out of the Metaverse.
   • Multiverse, on the other hand, may contain universes that may not resemble our own i.e. a universe with completely different laws of physics, objects and beings.
3. Metaverse is universal, while Multiverse is not
   • The true Metaverse will be converged and universal, bringing together all immersive world built by different companies.
   • In contrast, Multiverse has inherent multiplicity, which means there will always be more than one world which may or may not be interoperable.
4. Metaverse is interoperable, while Multiverse has limited integration
   • Metaverse allows users to teleport in and out of virtual spaces, carry objects around, port NFTs and much more.
   • Interoperability in Multiverse is still to be proven, as it will depend on the level of variance.
